I am J.D. Carney. I teach theology and coach the quarterbacks/offense on the football team. I am entering my first year here at SMCHS and recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame. I double-majored in both Theology and Film and the bitter winters there have made this transition very smooth!
I was born and raised in San Diego which has always been home-base, though my family lived in New Orleans for half of my childhood. I went to Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego where I fenced, ran track, and played football. After I attended a summer football camp at Notre Dame my senior year of high school, I was blessed with the opportunity to be brought onto the team as a preferred walk-on. I lived and breathed the true Rudy experience as a quarterback and signal-caller for the Irish! I was able to see action on the field my senior year as well.
During my time at Notre Dame, I also had a performance in the theatre department’s production of The Great Gatsby where I played Tom Buchanan. I have a great passion for acting and directing as well as studying theology. I became a theology teacher because I have a vocational call to education. On our library at Notre Dame we have an image of Jesus with his hands raised and titled: the Greatest Teacher. It is known by many as “Touchdown Jesus.” I feel it is a great honor to follow the example set by the Lord as a teacher. Every day, I strive to live out this call as illustrated by St. Thérèse of Lisieux and her Little Way: to do the little things with great love, to walk in humble confidence, and to offer myself to Merciful Love.
