Katie King is an English teacher here at SMCHS. In this role, Katie collaborates closely with her colleagues in all aspects of rhetoric and composition, including the fundamental writing skills necessary for literary analysis, essential traits for successful discourse, and cultivating a genuine interest in reading.
Katie earned her B.S. in Psychology with a Writing Minor from Regis University in Denver, CO where she also earned letters as an NCAA Division II student-athlete on the Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams. She completed her M.A. in Education through Loyola Marymount University’s PLACE Corps (Partners in Los Angeles Catholic Education) as a member of Cohort 13. She holds a California Single-Subject Teaching Credential for English and has taught at both the middle and high school grade levels.
Within education, Katie believes in work that is rooted by cura personalis, or “care for the whole person”. She hopes her students find their experience in her classroom to be a place where they feel they can grow spiritually, academically, and in community.
Prior to starting her tenure as an English teacher at SMCHS, Katie spent two years as an English and Psychology teacher at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. During her time there, she was an assistant coach for the nationally-ranked Boys Varsity Soccer team, and then served as Assistant Athletic Director, where she developed and presented on “Social Media and Personal Branding” for the school’s 400+ student-athletes. She is eager to bring her love for the game of soccer and a myriad of playing and coaching experiences as the Head Coach of Girls Varsity Soccer this year!
As an educator, Katie’s goal is to always challenge students to seek first to understand, then to be understood. She ardently believes that our ability to empathize and use our understanding of language to share our stories with others is what will ultimately allow us to find common ground with anyone, ultimately unifying us all in a shared human experience.
As an educator here at SMCHS, Katie strives to ensure that students are provided with the necessary tools, support and opportunities to self-advocate for their education, and in creating a memorable high school experience. She looks forward to being someone the students feel they can come to for help, encouragement, and to share with her all the puns they can!
