Who We Are: A Mariner celebration of Black History Month

Our SMCHS Black Cultural Society (BCS) honored Black History Month with a celebration dinner on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. The program opened with guest speaker Sheila E, famous singer and percussionist. She gave an encouraging talk to our students about never giving up on their dreams and offered the opportunity for them to ask questions about her life and career. Senior Dagem Y. then recited a poem in keeping with the event’s theme, Who We Are. Complementing these powerful talks was a delicious meal catered by Dulan’s Soul Food restaurant. After dinner, CEO and head coaches of the Los Angeles AquaNymphs program, Patrice Dodd and Joi Madison, shared their inspirational words. Author Bernadene High Coleman and her granddaughter Natalie (SMCHS senior) then recited two moving poems just before junior Lexxi B. closed the event with her beautiful rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing. The SMCHS Grand Pavilion was packed Tuesday night with a diverse group of students, families, and friends enjoying this inspiring commemoration of Black History Month.
