Mariners return to an enthusiastic and informative welcome!

The campus was awash in green and gold as we began the 2016-17 school year last week. We welcomed approximately 150 new families to our community at the Freshman and Transfer Student Orientation, Mass, and Dinner on Monday.  The theme of the Mass, "Enter the Journey", celebrated our commitment to each other's success as Mariners.  Student leaders facilitated group activities aimed at easing the transition to high school as well as promoting the school's mission and programs. The first week of school also included a pep rally welcoming back our students and introducing ASB's theme for the year-Mariner Mix Tape.  Students of all grade levels attended special breakout sessions each day.

The Class of 2020 and transfer students participated in a Tech Bootcamp where they received their MacBook Air computers, learned about responsible computer usage, and had an opportunity to begin using the learning management system, Schoology. The event was coordinated by Ms. Amy Peckins, Director of Innovative Learning and facilitated by members of SMCHS' Tech Committee.

The sophomores, juniors, and seniors attended the beginning of the year Dean’s Assembly. Our deans, Mr. Kris Anderson and Dr. Monique Hernandez, reviewed the Integrated Student Outcomes as well as the uniform policies, academic integrity policies, detention policies, and attendance and truancy policies.  The assembly illustrated to the students the importance of building of community through positive leadership and provided the opportunity for dialogue regarding the steps needed to be a successful Mariner.

The members of the Class of 2017 took part in a College Bootcamp. During this workshop, students completed their UC application, the Common Application, and the Coalition Application. Senior class guidance counselor, Mr. Lukas Mendoza shared, “It is our hope that students will finish them in these two days in order to focus on their classes, completing their application essays, and asking for letters of recommendation. In addition to working on applications, students are going through essay writing activities and receiving tips about writing effective college applications.”

Our SMCHS students are ready and equipped to start the school year!
